Sarah K & Andrew Simpson have developed a new material created from 100% recycled plastic collected from Australian beaches after it has been dumped out of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Marine Debris Bakelite is characterised by a marbled quality that references early Bakelite in look, weight and density. It is made from 100% recycled ocean plastic by using small-scale industrial and hand manufacturing processes developed entirely by us.
Our first product, the Marine Debris Bento Box was launched at Tokyo Design Week in 2015. It has been successfully sold and used by customers since.
In collaboration with Spark and Burnish we designed and produced these beautiful door knobs made from marine debris plastic. All profits gained from selling this products will be donated to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
A project with Supercyclers, that considers waste as a resource that we have not worked out what to do with. The Junk Press challenges the perception of junk mail being rubbish, and instead utilises trash as a raw material that is delivered daily for free. The press is sand cast in aluminium and has interchangeable moulds to make a range of bowls, plates, lunchboxes light shades and cups.
He Made She Made gallery on Oxford Street, invited 21 artists and designers to create a bespoke mask as part of their Masked Intentions exhibition. Our contribution to the show, entitled 'A Glimpse of Another' conceals facial emotion and allows the wearer to hear and react privately to dialogue and/or their environment. The mask highlights the importance of neutrality and respect through its maze of intricate cuts and precision detailing. The mask was a billet of aluminium which we CNC Machined in our Redfern Studio. There are also 20 signed and numbered editions of the print available for purchase through He Made She Made's online store.
There have been some lovely reviews of the exhibition on some cool websites including campaign brief, dandy magazine, digital citi and desktop.

The Green Rice Cup is made to replace the need for disposable coffee cups in an office environment. Each cup has a thickened ring, removing the need for a handle by providing a natural way of holding the cup that also remains cool to the touch, even when filled with hot liquids. The curve of the cup’s lip contours perfectly with the mouth when drinking and the additional saucer acts as a lid to prevent spilling.
Interpretation is an ongoing series of exhibitions held every two years and curated by industrial designer Andrew Simpson at Vert Design. In each exhibition, a number of local design pioneers come together and explore a particular manufacturing process or material, celebrating the adaptability and currency of industrial design. The brief for this exhibition was stone in all its form and processes including hand working and digital formation using the latest technologies.
Stilla comes from the Latin word for ‘a drop of liquid’ and this exquisite decanter is expertly designed as such.
Special mention was made of its unique form and function when it won first prize at the PYD Product of the Year Award 2009. It was described as a poetic expression of the elemental nature of liquid and the joys of sharing a drink. It demands centrepiece attention on any table and will leave your guests intrigued by its enchanting qualities.
